Transit was founded in Leuven in 1988 by Dirk Vanhecke and Bert de Leenheer. In 1998 the gallery moved to Mechelen. Transit shows and promotes international contemporary art, as well as organizing new exhibitions every two months. The gallery is part of an art-deco building dating from 1934. In this building and its garden, the visitor can permanently discover different works by artists who have exhibited at Transit since 1988.
