Realized in patinated bronze, De Kleine Vleermuis spreads its wings like a fragment of shadow frozen in light. Presented at solo exhibitions, this sculpture invites silent contemplation.
Inspired by nocturnal imagery and the ambivalent symbols of the bat, guide in the darkness and messenger between worlds, it embodies both protection and unease. Placed alone, it acts as a totemic presence; integrated into a group, it dialogues with other forms and opens up a broader narrative field.
Its precise modelling and deep patina reveal meticulous workmanship, transforming the animal into a mythical and timeless figure.
The sculpture De Klein Vleermuis is inspired by Johan Creten's monumental work De Vleermuis, a bronze sculpture that explores the duality between fragility and power through the image of a bat. With its wings spread, it questions the boundary between the terrestrial and the aerial, while evoking transformation.
De Vleermuis was exhibited at Johan Creten's monographic exhibition I Peccati at the Villa Medici in Rome, where it engaged in a dialogue with sacred and profane themes. This exhibition highlighted the work in a setting rich in symbolism. The sculpture also made its mark at FIAC 2019 in Paris, where it captivated collectors and critics alike.
