“De Vleermuis on the Pool,” 2017
De Vleermuis on the Pool captures the essence of the other versions of De Vleermuis, but this time, the bat is perched on the edge of a swimming pool, a variation that echoes one of the earliest versions of the work, De Vleermuis (fountain version), installed in 2016 in front of the Broerekerk church in Bolsward, the Netherlands. This installation, which created an interaction between water and sculpture, symbolised the passage between the terrestrial world and the aquatic universe, while reinforcing the ambiguity and duality inherent in the bat.
As in the fountain version, the sculpture retains its mythological character, but this time, the immobility of the bat on the water makes it even more enigmatic, open to multiple interpretations. This work continues to explore the themes of animality, transformation and mystery, while creating a visual tension between water and bronze.
